Ethereum Devcon 6
The Ethereum DevCon (Developers Conference) is intended to be a gathering for technical minds to gather and introduce their new thoughts and ideas out into the world to flourish. The last DevCon happened in 2019, held in Japan, to great success. COVID-19 put paid to any chance of another conference happening in the past couple of years, but with movement restrictions easing, the union of worldwide blockchain development leaders can begin again. This year the event is being held in Bogotá, Colombia.
Security Issues
There has been some controversy with the picking of Colombia as the hosting country for the DevCon. The level of crime in the capital is extremely high for armed robbery, kidnapping, and mugging, precisely what you would not want when expecting some of the richest Ethereum developers on the planet to all be piling in together. Even on the conference website itself, they say, “Don’t wear flashy items like expensive watches,” “don’t walk around with your phone out,” and “Try not to walk home alone at night.” This begs the question itself as to why the Ethereum Foundation chose Colombia as a place to bring such a huge amount of talent into one building.
Developer Concerns
Uniglo.io team member Darius was quoted as saying: “It is pretty wild they would choose a capital city with such a high crime rate to invite wealthy and well-known developers all together in one place. You may as well put big targets on the name badges they give out.” This would be especially risky for a team like Uniglo, a real-world tokenized asset-backed reserve currency, where presale is underway with great success so far and is one of the more prominent new tokens being spoken about.
Sandeep Naiwal of Polygon is also steering away from the event, as shown by this deleted tweet above, also mentioning later that Solana developers we mugged on arrival.
Conclusion
With developers like the Uniglo.io team not heading to the DevCon this year, it is unlikely to affect the token’s performance with great fundamentals, but will it be the start of a decline in developer conference attendance? Only time will tell.
